REVIEW: Lost Season 6 Episode 5 "Sundown"

We’ve now taken a look at Sayid’s life off of the Island. Even though his life in the flash sideways is quite hectic it seems much better than his “life” on the island. This episode deals with some very dark things and in some ways Sayid embraces them and in others he, well, reluctantly embraces them.

**WARNING SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW**

O.E., Theories, and anything Else I feel like sticking in here
Never before have I been so divided about Sayid. Even though I’ve known he was a torturer in the Iraqi Republican Guard I’ve always had a soft spot for his no nonsense action. This episode had me rooting for him in the beginning, questioning him in the middle, and hating him by the end. It was quite a journey for the character and me.

We catch up with Sayid off the island knocking on Nadia’s door in L.A.. In this reality she has Sayid’s brother as her husband. It’s interesting to see that Sayid viewed himself as unworthy to marry Nadia. It appears he saw the evil in himself too great. Maybe he thought it would bring a cloud over their relationship. So he pushes her to his brother whom I suppose Sayid viewed as the better man. I’m sure Sayid’s hope was that Nadia would have a better and safer life with him, but of course that didn’t happen. Sayid’s brother gets involved with the mob. Brilliant. Tip of the day: Don’t borrow money from the mob. They’ll take you out... A.K.A. Maimed or worse killed.

Sayid’s brother is “Mugged” and badly hurt by the people he borrowed money from. Sayid is forced to tap into his evil side in order to help his brother out of the bad situation. We get to see Keamy shot. I can’t say I didn’t think it was deserved. Keamy dying twice isn’t a bad thing. He’s one of those characters you wouldn’t mind seeing brought back to life and killed again. He’s quite a scum bag.

Back on the island Sayid is also involved in the dealings of two mobs- The Others and Locke’s crew. Dogen, the Asian leader of the Others, and Sayid start off this episode with a good brawl. By the end Dogen has put Sayid in his place. But when he has the chance to kill him he stops short. Dogen then banishes Sayid, but quickly un-banishes him if he’ll kill fake Locke (It reminded me of a Dwight Schrute thing i.e. “Shunned, un-shunned.”). Sayid agrees to kill fake Locke. I think it’s important that in both the flash sideways and on the island Sayid is asked to take care of a problem that requires him to kill someone. Off the island he’s reluctant, but on the island he’s pretty cool with it. Evil is taking over his heart in both realities.

Dogan gives us a peak into Jacob’s personality. Dogan was brought to the island after killing his son while being drunk and driving after picking his son up from baseball practice. We hear Dogan tell the story of how Jacob offered him hope and redemption on the island. Jacob seems to see the good in people who have done bad and reaches out to them. It’s also this story that gives insight to why he spared Sayid. During their fight a baseball is knocked off his desk. This apparantly reminds Dogan of his dead son and takes the killer instinct right out of him. His sparing of Sayid ends up killing many. Way to drop the ball Dogen (in more than one way).

Sayid’s encounter with fake Locke freaked me out. There must be a way to kill him, but we can mark off “Stab though the chest”. Sayid tried it and it didn’t work. What was Sayid’s biggest mistake? He let fake Locke speak to him. It was Fake Locke’s twisting of the truth and calm reassuring ways that won Sayid over to the evil side. Sayid only needed a little nudge.

Every time I see the Fake Locke he reminds me more of satan. He’s always tempting and always telling half truths. His requests are always simple but very destructive. Fake Locke asks Sayid to deliver a simple message that if anyone is left in the temple they will die by sunset. I also assume Sayid was asked to kill Dogen, but maybe he just did that on his own. Why? He’s an over achiever when it comes to being evil. Maybe he believes the more evil he is the quicker he’ll get Nadia back. I don’t believe the Fake Locke can or will deliver on bringing Nadia back.

We end off the episode with a mass killing. For some reason once Dogen is killed the smoke monster can enter the temple. The smoke monster destroys almost everyone except Sayid, Claire, and Kate. We also see Ilana, Lapidus, and crew burst in the temple and take Miles back through a super secret passage way. They also escape from the Smoke monster.

"The Lost Supper"

In the last scene several shots are emotionally moving. The whole scene is shot in an erie slow motion. As the camera pans over dead in the temple we see a shot of a burning cross. Sayid and Claire are obviously under fake Locke’s spell now and are truly his recruits. They look more like zombies than people. In the final shot of Locke I couldn’t help but be remind me of Judas Iscariot. I’m not sure why. Maybe it was the torches and the mob behind him. In a promotional picture for Lost the cast is arranged to look like The Last Supper by Leonardo De Vince. Locke is in the Jesus spot. I don’t think he is to represent the Christ figure but the anti-Christ figure. At the beginning of this season I wondered if Locke was good or evil. I wonder no longer. In my mind he is evil.

We hear a few curse words, but the tone of this episode is the most concerning part. It’s very dark. If anything would deter one from letting young kids see this episode of Lost it would be the violence. Violent, violent, violent. Stabs through the chest, slit throats, mass deaths, and gun killings are all in this episode. All of the violence serves the story and is in no way portrayed as a good thing, but I would just warn you that it’s probably too much for kids.

Ivey’s Questions?
Is Dogen the keeper of the island? Is it that once he is dead the Smoke monster has free reign? Was it passed from Jacob to him and now it’s to go to jack?

Is Sayid really infected or just in love to the point of insanity?

What will Kate do with Locke?

When will we see an episode about Richard?
