REVIEW: Lost- Season 6 Ep. 9 "Ab Aeterno"

Ricardo, we finally got your episode. Last night’s Lost episode was a night I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. I’ve always had questions of where Richard came from. Last night we got his story.
*Insert 80's slow clap here*

***WARNING SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW, I PROMISE***

Review and Whatever Else I Want to Talk About...
The episode started off with the scared Richard we’ve come to know this season. His change of demeanor has been interesting, confusing, and not quite as satisfying as the Richard we came to know in seasons 3, 4, and 5. I was hoping we would get an explanation of this change. After this episode it all made sense.

The Richard we’ve seen this season is very much like the Richard of 1867. In 1867 we see him scared and vulnerable as his wife faces death. Richard, as we find out, is a poor Spaniard with a sick wife. Richard is willing to do anything to save Isabella his wife. Similar to many of Lost’s characters Richard finds himself in a situation that has put a death mark on him. Richard accidentally kills a doctor in a fight for medicine that he can’t get to his wife before she dies (let’s be honest no one was sorry to see that doctor go. He was a jerk). That leads to his imprisonment and death sentence. Richard avoids his death because a priest sells him into slavery on the, get ready for it, Black Rock. The ship crashes, Richard gets stuck on the island, the Man-in-Black tempts him, and finally Jacob wins Richard over and makes him the everlasting mediator of the Island.

I think it’s official now-- The Man-in-Black is evil. There should be no more questions regarding that matter. We again see him as a killer, tempter and liar. He will promise anything to get his way. My theory is that he’s actually evil in flesh. He is in a since the actual devil. The island is where he is imprisoned. His full evil can’t be expressed in the world until he is released. It was interesting to hear that he believes that man is essentially evil.

Candidates? Will there be an election and is it private ballot?

Jacob, on the other hand, is the good guy. Even though I think the MIB might actually be satan I don’t think that Jacob is God. I think that it’s more likely he is an angel and protector/guardian of the island. But it may be that he’s not an angel as much as a mortal guardian that once he’s killed is replaced by another. Jacob answers to God, but he is not God.

The island is the over-lord mystery that all the other smaller Lost mysteries live under. Tonight we had our first real explanation of what the island is. It was different than explanations   we’ve heard in the past because it didn’t tell about the island’s behavior or inhabitants. We found out, vaguely, what the Island is. It’s a cork that holds all the evil of hell from entering the world. My guess is it can also be described as a prison for a certain MIB.

Richard’s story was very entertaining. I think I liked it more than some people. Nestor Carbonell (Richard) was amazing. I thought the guy was a Spaniard! The story between him and his wife was touching but didn’t explain his driving force. Why did Richard serve Jacob without question for so many years? He was never going to get his wife back. I guess that Richard is just a virtuous soul and wants to serve good and not evil. It was great to see Hurley translate for Isabella. I think that moment sealed Richard’s side for the rest of Lost. Richard won’t be a Lockite (but I’m not sure he’ll be a Jacobite either). I think from here on out his motivation will be his wife’s words to kill the MIB.

Crap Index:
There was no sexual crap and very little cursing. There were some very confusing and off base spiritual claims, but Lost has never claimed to be Biblically sound. Violence was actually a little more gruesome than normal. Between the murder of the doctor and the massacre of the Black Rock crew there was a lot of blood.

O.E.- 9.5
C.I.- 8.0
GameTrust Recommendation- 9.0
